 Fasting As We Believe

On March 11, 2014, we will begin 40-days of fasting and prayer as a part of our commitment to truly believe God in 2014.  God purposes to do a great work in the lives of His children and all we have to do is trust Him with our lives.  In addition, we are fasting as we focus on our Spring Revival that will be held on April 15-17, 2014.  Dr. Otis McMillan is the revival preacher and we will be in agreement for a great move of God during the revival.  The revival ends on Maundy Thursday, and the service on Thursday evening will include Holy Communion.

The fast will consist of giving up sweets, coffee, soft drinks and junk food (potato chips, etc.) during the entire time as well as other food listed below.  In addition to the elimination of certain foods, we will fast for six hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. during the first 3 weeks.  During weeks four and five, we will fast for nine hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  During week six, we will fast for twelve hours Monday through and Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.  Water is permitted during the time of fasting.

In addition to fasting, everyone is encouraged to spend time normally devoted to eating to studying and meditating in God’s Word.  We are believing God and we want to get His Word in our spirits in order that it might produce the results God purposes for our lives.

No one should fast who is medically unable to go without food for the periods included in the fast.   Instead, they should consider other ways of sacrificing like giving up television, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. during those times.  The desire is to make sure that we are yielding ourselves to what God purposes to do in us.

The fast is cumulative, meaning when an item is given up, it is not eaten again until the end of the fast.

 Week One – Pork

 Week Two – Beef

Week Three – Chicken

Week Four – Fish

Bible Reading Schedule

Bible Sermon Website Banner

God bless you for your decision to join the Mount Pisgah Harnett Church family as we read through the Bible together in 2014.  In order to successfully complete our task, it is important that each of us be consistent, reading each day, and that we dedicate the amount of time needed to complete each reading assignment.  To gain the most benefit out of our reading, I encourage all of us to read prayerfully and carefully.  We should ask the Holy Spirit to help us to understand what we read and it is good to quote and believe Psalm 119:18 as we prepare to read, “Open thou mine eyes,  that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”

We will begin reading the New Testament and will conclude with reading the Old Testament.  As we read, we should look to identify promises to claim, commands to obey and sins to forsake.  In addition, it is good to ask those questions that will help us to understand.  Who is the writer?  When is he writing?   Who is he writing to?  What is he writing about?  There are times when the answers will be pretty obvious from the text, but there will be other times when it may require looking to other sources for insight.  Also, it is good to ask the question, “Where do I see something about Jesus in the text?”

Our theme for 2014 is, “We Are Believing God” and in order to believe Him, we need to know what He has said.  His Word is the perfect place to learn about what He said.  It is my prayer that all of us will commit ourselves to this journey together and on December 31, 2014, we will have not only read the Bible through but we will have more of God’s Word shaping our lives.
